'Mrs. Miniver' depicts those left behind in wartime

Set in 1939-1940 England, the 1942 film, "Mrs. Miniver," directed by William Wyler, is a story of war, community, love and sacrifice. But most importantly, it is a story of family. The main protagonist, Mrs. Miniver (Greer Garson), is a typical happily married, upper class, stay-at-home wife with three children.

Only six games in, it has already been an up-and-down season for the CSU men's basketball team, as the Rams sit at 3-3, with a mix of impressive and underwhelming games. A large factor of the inconsistency has been a rash of injuries that has hampered the Rams, as CSU hasn't been able to use the starting lineup from the season opener for a full game since the second game of the season.

CSU professor honored for work in study of water

CSU Civil engineering professor and alumni Chih Ted Yang was honored earlier this month with the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water in the Surface Water Branch for his study of river morphology. A purse of just over $130,000 accompanied the award, which Yang accepted at the Third International Conference on Water Resources and Arid Environments in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Nov.

CSU awarded $12.5 million for new curriculum development

The National Science Foundation awarded CSU $12.5 million earlier this month for its development of improved science and math-based middle school and high school curricula and advanced teacher education. Partnering with 11 other universities and K-12 school districts including Poudre School District and the University of Northern Colorado and Long-Term Ecological Research sites across the country, CSU will lead a 5-year collaborative effort to incorporate new environmental science research into current curricula to increase students' environmental awareness.

Stock fall 700 points as leaders admit U.S. economy is in recession

NEW YORK -- The reality that the nation is indeed in recession and that the downturn may well be prolonged sent Wall Street plunging Monday, hurtling the Dow Jones industrials down nearly 700 points and wiping out more than half of last week's big gains. All the major indicators fell more than 7 percent, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index down nearly 9 percent.

Campus AIDS memorial draws minimal attendance

Shauna DeLuca, the chair of the World AIDS Day Committee in Fort Collins, stood in front of a small crowd in the Lory Student Center Monday and told them as generations pass, increasingly fewer people are aware of the AIDS pandemic. In a testimony to her subject, only about 10 students who did not participate in the organizations that arranged the speeches and subsequent candle light vigil honoring the 20th annual World AIDS Day attended the event.

After 18 months of construction and about $13 million dollars in student fees, the new Computer Science building with 24/7 computer lab access is finished and set to open sometime in January, officials said. Brian Chase, director of facilities, said a crew is in the process of installing all of the equipment and that the building should open at the start of the 2009 spring semester, "right on schedule.

WASHINGTON - Facing severe cutbacks in state services as the recession deepens, the nation's governors pressed their case on Capitol Hill Monday, asking for at least $40 billion to help pay for health care for the poor and disabled.
