Our View: Junta playing politics with people's lives

During the time period immediately following a natural disaster, the last thing a government wants to do is play political hardball with potential aid-giving countries. Unless of course, said government is the military junta ruling Myanmar. On Thursday, five days after a cyclone devastated the Irrawaddy delta with 120 mph winds and water surges more than fifteen feet high, the junta permitted the first shipment of foreign aid to enter the country, conspicuously refusing aid from the U.

If you're not one of the many students who skip this page and go right to the comics and crossword puzzle then you've probably noticed that the opinion section this past week has been different. With a number of staff columnists getting ready to graduate, opinions and diatribes have been replaced with declarations of faith, expressions of gratitude and words of advice.

This is my Hijab; this is my choice

About two months ago I made one of the biggest decisions of my life when I chose to start wearing the hijab (head scarf). I wear it as a symbol of who I am and what I believe, even if it means standing out from the crowd. I made this decision knowing fully that I live in a society that largely fails to understand the concept of hijab and its meaning to the millions of Muslim women who observe it.
