CSU's Active Minds offer suicide prevention training

The CSU chapter of Active Minds held a suicide prevention training session on Tuesday in the Lory Student Center. Kathleen McKinney, the adviser to the organization, addressed a group of about 20 about "Question, Persuade, Refer," the suicide prevention training method used at CSU.

PHILADELPHIA - A half-dozen police officers kicked and beat three men pulled from a car during a traffic stop as a TV helicopter taped the confrontation. The video, shot by WTXF-TV, shows three police cars stopping a car Monday, two days after a city officer was shot to death responding to a bank robbery.

75 students arrested in SDSU drug bust

SAN DIEGO -Dozens of San Diego State University students were arrested after a sweeping drug investigation found that some fraternity members openly dealt drugs and one even sent a mass text message advertising cocaine, authorities said Tuesday. Two kilograms of cocaine were seized, along with 350 Ecstasy pills, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, hash oil, methamphetamine, illicit prescription drugs, several guns and at least $60,000 in cash, authorities said.

WASHINGTON - The Department of Veterans Affairs' top mental health official said Tuesday he made a poor choice of words when he sent his colleagues an e-mail about suicide data that started out with "Shh!" Dr. Ira Katz, the VA's mental health director, told the House Veterans Affairs Committee that the e-mail was in poor tone - even though the body contained "appropriate, healthy dialogue" about the data.

Committee advises non-profit status

Bringing an end to months of speculation and debate, Blanche Hughes, vice president of Student Affairs, recommended to CSU President Larry Penley that Student Media become an independent, not-for-profit media corporation Monday. Hughes' recommendation came in the form of a memorandum to Penley who endorsed the recommendations and will present it to the Board of Governors of the CSU system this summer.

YANGON, Myanmar - International aid began to trickle into Myanmar on Tuesday, but the stricken Irrawaddy delta, the nation's rice bowl where 22,000 people perished and twice as many are missing, remained cut off from the world. In the former capital of Yangon, soldiers from the repressive military regime were out on the streets in large numbers for the first time since Cyclone Nargis hit over the weekend, helping to clear away rubble.

A team of undergraduate senior mechanical engineers on campus soared ahead in aerial vehicle design, bringing home the grand prize at the 2008 Undergraduate Space Research Symposium this year. The project started in spring last year, and Allison Porter, Chris Lawhorn and Grant Rhoads spent the summer months developing and constructing their design for an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Martinez toxicology report clean

Late CSU student Matthew Martinez' toxicology screen showed no traces of cocaine in his system, the Larimer County Coroner's Office confirmed Tuesday. An April 15 Collegian report on the death included information from an anonymous Fort Collins Police Services employee who was involved with the investigation who said Martinez died of a cocaine overdose.
