Why we have a caucus

When Colorado residents meet to caucus tomorrow, they'll chat with one another, discussing the issues facing the nation and the candidates who could become America's next leader. Things used to be different, though. Colorado residents used to vote via the primary, a straight forward voting process that state legislators eliminated in 2004 in favor of the current caucus process.

CSU researcher focuses on pollution

In states around the nation, communities with air and water pollution have often seen a link to health problems for residents. One researcher with CSU wants to know if such a link exists in Northern Colorado. Dr. Jennifer Peel, an assistant professor of epidemiology at CSU, is researching daily pollution spikes in Greeley and Denver to determine if a correlation exists with daily emergency room visits.

Congressional hopeful Betsy Markey (D-Fort Collins) told students at Poudre High School Saturday that although they are not yet eligible to vote in Super Tuesday's primary, they can still affect a change in politics locally and nationally. Answering questions from the students, her son Al Markey among them, she talked to the youth, about the impact of national and local issues on their lives, spending the most time on education, health care, the economy and the environment.

Some students at CSU have just realized the quickly approaching Super Tuesday and have no idea how, who, or where to give their vote, and what it means to be a part of the Colorado caucuses. "I don't know what that really means," said Brittany Hoegert, a senior sociology major when asked what a caucus is.

Des Moines, Iowa's Webster 1 was about to make its pick for the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee, and everything had to be in order within the hour before they shut the doors and started the Iowa caucus process.
