Emergency response drills a common practice on campus

University police responded to a fictitious gunman in Newsom Residence Hall Thursday morning as part of a drill designed to "mimic" the events of the Virginia Tech massacre. The scenario began at about 8:30 and included a fictitious gunman killing a student in Newsom, fleeing the scene and then releasing a chemical agent in Yates Hall, said Dexter Yarbrough, CSU Police Department chief.
CSU boasts largest freshman class ever

The final census has been taken, marking this year's freshman class in the record books permanently. According to the CSU Office of the Vice President for Enrollment, the university enrolled its largest freshman class ever with 4,392 students. "Anytime it (the number) is higher than your target, you're pleased with exceeding that number," said Robin Brown, vice president for enrollment and access.
Taser incident ignites debate

Monday's incident on the University of Florida's campus in which a student was Tasered while speaking out during an assembly has sparked debate across the country over free speech and the use of a Taser by law enforcement officials.
While many students at CSU questioned the intentions of student Andrew Meyer, who was subdued by officers after drawing over his allotted question time at Sen.John Kerry's speech, many expressed concerns about police resorting to Tasering Meyer while he allegedly resisted arrest.

New Belgium's annual philanthropic, costume-clad bike tour once again finds its way to local streets as the 7th annual Tour de Fat hits Fort Collins Saturday at 11 a.m. And organizers estimate it to be even bigger and more successful than ever. The Tour De Fat began in 2000 and initially toured six cities spread across the Western United States.

With so many American soldiers held as prisoners of war or still missing in action, groups across the country are honoring those who risk lives to ensure freedom with a 24-hour memorial vigil. In coordination with the national Prisoner of War (POW)/Missing in Action (MIA) Recognition Day, the Arnold Air Society held a memorial vigil for those American soldiers who still haven't returned home.

Residents and rescue workers were taken by surprise when one of the largest rainstorms in state history caused Spring Creek to overflow, creating a flash flood that engulfed much of the city and the heart of the CSU campus.

If kindness could be measured in dollars and cents, a few hours of service might seem like pocket change to those who sacrificed the semester's first Saturday afternoon as part of CSU's RamServe. But coordinators estimate the 460 student and community volunteers provided about $25,000 in community service over the course of only three hours.
