Gonzales resigns, bringing GOP relief, Democratic vows to continue probes

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' resignation Monday after months of draining controversy drew expressions of relief from Republicans and a vow from Democrats to pursue their investigation into fired federal prosecutors. President Bush, Gonzales' most dogged defender, told reporters he had accepted the resignation reluctantly.

BOISE, Idaho - A defiant Sen. Larry Craig denied any wrongdoing Tuesday despite his guilty plea this summer in a men's room police sting, emphatically adding, "I am not gay. I have never been gay." Craig, a third-term senator from Idaho, proclaimed his innocence as well as his sexuality less than an hour after Senate leaders from his own Republican Party called for an ethics committee review of his case.

5 University of Colorado temps on paid leave for background check

BOULDER - Five people hired at the University of Colorado through a mental-health agency were placed on paid leave for background checks Tuesday after a former program participant was accused of attacking a student with a knife. Kenton Drew Astin, who had a temporary job as a cashier at the university last year, was accused of slashing freshman Michael George Knorps across the neck with a knife on Monday.

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' replacement, whoever that may be, faces a potentially nasty Senate confirmation and a beleaguered Justice Department badly in need of leadership. Gonzales' resignation, announced Monday, cheered his critics who for months had demanded the attorney general quit over questions about his credibility.

Greek Life aims to clear up stereotypes

Greek Life will be participating in the Involvement Fair Wednesday with the intention of wiping the slate clean. The hope is that this semester's fair will break down some of the stereotypes and misleading information that is often associated with Greek Life, said Sonja Jensen, the director for Greek Life.

When Hurricane Katrina cast its first deadly cloud over New Orleans two years ago, CSU professor Kate Browne was a world away.

The devastation that would soon drown her home country suddenly seemed more important than her research in the French Caribbean.

"We needed to document this experience," the anthropology professor said.

With her expertise in Afro-Creole populations, Browne knew that this disaster would carry heavy consequences on the people of Louisiana.

Two years have passed since Hurricane Katrina overwhelmed the Gulf Coast, devastating New Orleans and many southern cities in the United States. The hurricane is considered one of the worst to ever hit this country.

On Aug. 29, 2005 and the days following, the hurricane killed more than 2,000 people and left more than 800,000 homeless.

Residents and rescue workers were taken by surprise when one of the largest rainstorms in state history caused Spring Creek to overflow, creating a flash flood that engulfed much of the city and the heart of the CSU campus.

If kindness could be measured in dollars and cents, a few hours of service might seem like pocket change to those who sacrificed the semester's first Saturday afternoon as part of CSU's RamServe. But coordinators estimate the 460 student and community volunteers provided about $25,000 in community service over the course of only three hours.
