Sojourner: He who fights with bin Ladens
Monday may have been a day for celebration; today must be one for reflection. It will be for me. I’ve been recovering far too slowly from an infected wisdom teeth extraction surgery last week, but despite sitting in an opiate haze Sunday night, I wouldn’t have missed coming into the Collegian’s newsroom once word of Osama bin Laden’s death broke for anything. Breaking news is the reason I love journalism. May 3, 2011 | 11:40 pm
Sojourner: Lamenting college days gone by
The end, for me, is nigh. Graduation looms.
It’s pretty standard for columnists approaching the entropic singularity that is the conclusion of all things college to write some kind of wordy, memoirish drivel in their column space mourning the
passing of their college days.
I’ve always thought these columns represent a strange, sad attempt to forever memorialize a defining experience that the writer suddenly realized shot by in the blink of an eye.

Sojourner: All of the reasons why I hate the highs
I’ll admit it; I hate the highs. Some friends keep telling me that if I just get to know one or two –– if I start to understand what being high means –– I’ll learn to accept them, even like them. Apr 19, 2011 | 11:57 pm

Sojourner: Higher ed funding crisis isn't a crisis
Tuition rates are skyrocketing, student fees are marching upward, higher education is in crisis, the sky is falling and I can’t think of anything better that could happen to Colorado’s university system. This time last year, I was righteously angry at the lack of support Colorado’s taxpayers now provide the state’s higher education system; I was fearful of the impact falling state support would have on the quality of education provided by its schools. I’ve changed my mind. Much like budget crises worldwide are forcing whole societies to reexamine the role, size and priorities of their governments, Colorado’s higher education budget crisis needs to force Coloradans to examine the role, size and priorities of their universities. It’s not that education isn’t critical to societal success –– as a purely practical measure, research shows that education is a direct indicator of personal income –– but America’s university system has become a bloated, unwieldy beast, wandering lost in dark caverns and blindly defending its beleaguered existence. Where teaching should be king, administrative bureaucracy, research and entertainment rule the roost. Apr 13, 2011 | 12:26 am

Weather helping, hindering Crystal Fire efforts
While a cold-weather storm system is assisting firefighters against the 2,000-acre Crystal Fire burning in the mountains west of Fort Collins, conditions are also grounding three air water-drop vehicles and high winds are slowing efforts to evacuate animals abandoned by fleeing residents. The system began dropping heavy snow in the area this morning, and shifting winds began to push the fire back on itself, aiding firefighting efforts. Apr 4, 2011 | 12:46 am
