Grad school more popular during recession

Senior economics major Alexis Sanders hopes that one day his career will help him revolutionize the criminal justice system. But, with jobs in short supply due to the recession, Sanders said before he brings about prison reform he is pursuing a graduate degree for the sake of his career goal because he is worried about the limited opportunities that an undergraduate degree provides. “We live in a world now where an undergraduate degree may not cut it,” Sanders said. Sanders said that having a master’s or doctorate degree opens up opportunities both nationally and internationally.

With Colorado losing jobs faster than the national average, graduating CSU students should expect more competition from experienced workers than there has traditionally been, economist Jacqueline Midkiff said. Midkiff, a regional economist for the United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics, said she is hesitant to show optimism about the state’s employment future because, despite employment numbers improving nationwide, the statistics don’t look too good for Colorado. Currently, she said, the total percentage of Coloradans employed has fallen 3.6 percent, while the U.S.

It was while hiking with his chocolate Labrador, Ophelia, when CSU graduate Brian Fate had a stroke of inspiration. “There I was, drinking a sports beverage, and I thought to myself, ‘Hey, why do dogs only get to drink water?’” Fate said. It was in that moment that Dogdration was born. Dogdration is a brand of electrolyte and vitamin enhanced water for dogs, with an added peanut butter flavor to make it a special treat. “Ophelia loves it,” Fate said. Fate, 26, graduated from CSU in 2007 with a degree in natural resources.
