Students’ interest in Ron Paul misguided

Ron Paul’s visit has brought a level of excitement to the CSU community that we haven’t seen since that last presidential candidate came to speak.

And while we happy young voters are getting excited about a presidential candidate, and a Republican no less, we also have some reservations — namely, that people are getting swept up in a Ron Paul frenzy without stopping to question what his presidency would actually mean.

Paul’s supporters can tout “revolution,” “common sense” and “liberty” all they’d like, but the truth is that some of Paul’s more radical ideals would have some serious consequences.

If elected, Paul promises to eliminate the Federal Reserve, cede most federal power to the states (that would include repealing numerous important federal mandates, including the ones that prohibit segregation in schools) and return to a gold standard.

He also believes that, rather than relying on government restrictions for environmental control, free enterprise is perfectly capable of regulating the environment. Call us crazy, but the BP oil spill pretty much proves how misguided this idea is.

And while Paul claims to be a stringent libertarian, he nevertheless advocates banning abortion and is quoted as saying that gay marriage is absurd.

We’re glad young people have found a candidate they can believe in, and someone who they can rally around, but we’re not quite sure it’s a good thing that they’re rallying around Ron Paul.

After all, “revolution” and “liberty” sound great at face value, but when you actually research what they mean to Paul, they might not be so great after all.

Actually, upon further research and evaluation, Ron Paul’s stances on a wide range of issues are much better through and through than his opponents. Paul is the only candidate who actually stands by his principles and he is the only one in the debates to answer questions directly. He doesn’t talk around the issues.

I guess the anonymous writer of this article wants someone in office that will continue the wars, continue rampant spending, and continue to take freedom away from the people of the United States little by little.

Why does Ron Paul garner an immense amount of support from young people? We are sick of the way this country is headed and won’t stand by and watch our future melt away in the hands of those who have brought us down this far already. It is time to bring our country back to its roots – Ron Paul will help get us there.

An editorial board should hold themselves up to better standards than this piece of mud pie. Call me crazy but you should at least present some facts and statements if you’re to consider your Editorial Board opinion more valid than anyone else’s personal opinion. Editorial Board Fail.

What’s all this “we” talk? Younger people completely understand and agree with what Ron Paul stands for. They arn’t “misguided”. But great one sided opinion..

I’m with everyone else on this discussion. This article is garbage. Here’s why:
Re: The Fed.
Paul’s plan is to allow competing currencies to end the Fed-controlled dollar hegemony. He doesn’t like the Fed, but his plan is to make it compete. If nothing else, this will ensure that those who hold confidence in the dollar will demand accountability in the Federal Reserve.

Re: Environment
Paul’s position is to have property owners, be it the state or individuals, regulate. Property owners and the courts will actually make pollution more difficult, and are less susceptible to the whims of politicians and their lobbyists. The Federal gov’t actually CAPPED the damages BP had to pay (They did the same with the Exxon Valdez, too). Paul’s approach would’ve been much harsher on BP.

As a college student, many of us are very capable of reading into issues that effect all of our lives. I don’t know who would allow this to be published but it would be great if the author didn’t assume what all students base their reasoning around. This is a very poor article and I’m not surprised there is no writer listed. Try to write an article without unwarranted bias and it might be worthy of being published. I suggest removing this article before its seen by more people.
How about we elect another politician that switches their views depending on the audience their addressing as well as controlling our country behind closed doors with special interest groups and big business. Great idea author!!

Ok, I will call you crazy—the collusion between our government and BP, and the illusion that government regulation WORKS created the environment for the BP oil spill. You guys must be sophomores.

“Is an adovcate of abbortion and is quoted as saying gay marriage is absurd”??
1. Whatever his believes on theses two issues, Paul has stated that these are state issues and that he would take no federal action on them
2. Quoted as saying? This is hardly a public stance or “goal” on Paul’s part. I’ve been “quoted” as saying that rednecks are stupid. Does that mean I plan to discriminate against them? No.
3 . As a soon to be young voter, my reasons for supporting Ron are his views the federal budget, the economy, and on the Federal Reserve. He’s seems to be the only candidate that is saying something different from the other candidates. He certainly doesn’t stick to the “ unlike obama” lines used by Romney and other candidates.
4. Your aticle is not very detailed. Maybe if you provided an opposing view and reasons instead of just naming “facts” and statements it would be easier to understand your problems with Ron Paul. As the article is now, its as if your implying the idea of ending the Fed or other government programs is blasphemous in an of itself.

This story is very “misguided” and way off base. The editorial board would have us believe that some misguided candidate named Dr. Ron Paul is coming to Colorado State to speak to a packed house of misguided college students and citizens? The subjects of this heretical Congressman are: a balanced budget, creating sound money, ending foreign aid, stopping undeclared wars, bring our troops home, maximizing personal Liberty, and especially following the Constitution. If the editorial board believes that this Congressman, these people who will attend, and these subjects are all misguided, then I recommend that these editors take a good look at themselves in the mirror and ask if another occupation would better suit their warped sense of reality.

I’m a columnist for the Collegian and I say with no small amount of disgust, the editorial board failed to accurately research any of their claims.

They’ve fallen into the trap of supporting the mainstream media’s talking points and the two party system’s attacks against the only candidate who has COMPLICATED policy views that CANNOT be summarized in 400 words or less.

I’m not sure who thought this was a good idea, but look for my response throughout the week.

S. Jacob Stern: You have my vote to be on the editorial board. You bro, are the conscience of this newspaper, and I hope they will listen to what you have to say. The posted comments here are a good starting point for them to get up to speed about Ron Paul. Thanks.

Ron Paul isn’t in the student’s best interests? What evidence do you present for the so-called “radical ideals… with serious consequences”?

Ron Paul’s philosophy is the classical-liberalism that the US was founded upon (see John Locke, Natural Law, etc). Is this what the Collegian considers radical?

You will have to rise earlier in the morning Editors than to create sheep to herd out of these College students. Especially if they are already Ron Paul supporters. Why would you condemn their opinions and personal decisions as individual Americans?
As is evidence here they are quite brilliant. They should fire the “board” of their paper.

Sounds like this author didn’t research Ron Paul the way he suggests his readers should. Those who have done their homework know this author simply doesn’t understand the proper role of a limited government, and that our current government is stretched far beyond its constitutional limits.
Paul’s position on the Federal reserve is well documented, and it would not simply end.
Paul would not cede ANY federal authority to the states- Paul identifies areas where the federal government unconstitutionally interferes with what are inherently state issues per the 10th Amendment.
The BP oil spill is actually a good example for Paul’s position. With all of the federal bureaucracy in place the spill still happened and was a disaster. Too much government causes things to not get done. Free market self-regulation and state/local oversight would be far more effective.
While Ron Paul is in favor of the right to life and overturning Roe v Wade, this is one of the many things he recognizes is state jurisdiction. Paul favors getting the federal government out of issues that the Constitution does not empower it to regulate. This includes marriage. Paul personally opposes same-sex marriage statutes, however he favors states deciding the matter for themselves per the 10th Amendment.
Young people have the most to lose in these elections, and they are very wise to listen to Paul. He strictly adheres to the Constitution, unlike any other candidate or president in recent history.
Ron Paul is the only candidate that offers young people something to look forward to. Freedom is popular, and a Ron Paul presidency will restore civil liberties and restrict the federal government to the limits of the Constitution as it should be, and as it should have always been.
A Ron Paul presidency will be drastically different, but for the better- because the Constitution matters.

C’mon folks. I’m no Ron Paul zealot, but this editorial is plain misleading.

I realize you’ve got limited space in which to express ideas, but much of what you re-parrot here is dishonest, oversimplified and not consistent with Paul’s record or beliefs. If you don’t have the space to make an accurate, complete and honest argument, don’t do it at all.

To take one of your more egregiously indefensible claims, Paul does not support banning abortion at the federal level, nor is he, as you imply, an opponent of gay marriage. Really, a quick Google search and five minutes worth of reading would have better informed you on the topic. Many of the other issues you list are more complex and more wonkish, but the point-in-fact manner in which you state them does the issues, and your readership, an injustice.

As the guiding force behind a newspaper you should take seriously your power to influence informed debate on campus. If we are going to fix the shortcomings of this country, we need nuanced and informed debate, not ham-handed half-truths pedaled by the very media who claim to aim to influence and inform. A misinformed electorate is worse than an uninformed one.

And we’ve already got Fox News and MSNBC for that.

Dr. Ron Paul is the only candidate with a plan to cut spending and truly balance the budget. This is the only plan that will deliver what America needs in these difficult times: Major regulatory relief, large spending cuts, sound monetary policy, and a balanced budget.

Ron Paul will cut $1 trillion in spending during the first year of his presidency, eliminate five cabinet departments (Energy, HUD, Commerce, Interior, and Education), abolish the Transportation Security Administration, abolish corporate subsidies, stop foreign aid, end foreign wars, and return most other spending to 2006 levels.

Paul has been preaching and practicing the same gospel for 30 years. You can go on youtube and watch a video of the young congressman Paul in 1988 when he ran as a Libertarian talking about the exact same issues that have only recently begun to make the headlines. Like some prophet of old, Ron Paul was warning about the housing bubble as well as proposing a bill that would have deflected the whole economic collapse years prior.

Obama who came with promises of Peace and Security, but only gave us more Unconstitutional Wars, more Patriot Act, more spying on the American people, more executive orders, and now the Indefinite Detention and even Assasination of American Citizens. Could you imagine Bush getting away with that? Not to mention topping Bush’s policies of bailing out the banks and heaping unsurmountable debt on the backs of countless generations.

Watch “The Obama Deception” … Watch “Freedom to Fascism” .. Read books, like say “The Creature from Jeckle Island”. Educate yourselves as to the real threat to our way of life comes from. It isn’t from one of the revolving puppet politicians who occupy the White House every few years.

And pay attention to who the mainstream dinosaur media props up, or who they ignore and attack. Ron Paul has been attacked from both sides of the media (fake Liberal and fake Conservative) continually. Why? Because this rare breed of character can’t be bought by the special interests who own our media.

Wake up people! Ron Paul is the only true choice and the only guy who gives a damn about this country!

Get involved, quit being spectators, go to the caucus Feb 7th and become a state delegate, donate, tell everone you know to do all of the above!

All the responses to this piece of trash ‘our view” are a delight. It is nice to see how out of touch young journalist become so early on in their career. Have fun fun busing tables for a living once you graduate editorial board!
