MWC Notebook - 10/11

Air Force:

Despite the football team’s success, the Air Force hockey team (1-2) struggled this weekend in Alaska, dropping games to both No. 12 Alaska, 5-2, and Alaska-Anchorage, 3-2, at the Kendall Hockey Classic.

It was the second period that ruined the Falcons against Alaska-Anchorage, as Air Force allowed three goals.

Brigham Young:

After an unprecedented four game losing streak, the BYU football team (2-4, 1-1 MWC) finally broke out of its slump by defeating San Diego State 24-21 on Saturday.

Though junior running back J.J. Di Luigi led the Cougars’ rushing attack with 134 yards, it was Bryan Kariya’s 85 yards and two touchdowns that were the biggest difference.

Next week, BYU travels to Fort Worth, Texas to take on No. 4 TCU.

New Mexico:

It was a battle of college football’s winless on Saturday in Las Cruces, N.M. between in-state rivals New Mexico State (1-4, 0-1 WAC) and New Mexico (0-6, 0-2 MWC).

Despite the Lobos’ defense not allowing a single touchdown to the Aggies, New Mexico State was able to pull out the 16-14 victory, though only amassing 206 yards of offense.

New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley is now 1-17 through one and a half seasons with the Lobos.

San Diego State:

The SDSU volleyball team (8-10, 3-3) moved into fourth place in the Mountain West Conference standings on Saturday after edging out Utah 3-2.

In the final set, Utah had a comfortable 13-7 lead before the Aztecs rallied for eight consecutive points to win the match.

SDSU will take a brief hiatus from MWC play this week as the Aztecs host Seattle on Friday.

TCU:

Sunday, TCU (6-0, 2-0) moved into the No. 4 spot of the AP college football Top 25 after shutting out Wyoming 45-0.

The shutout was the Horned Frogs’ second in a row after defeating CSU 27-0 last week.

Senior quarterback Andy Dalton broke out of his passing slump, throwing for 270 yards and three touchdowns on 14 of 17 attempts.

UNLV:

The UNLV men’s soccer team (5-6-0, 1-1-1 MPSF) picked up a win and a tie this past weekend in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action.

After losing their season opener to New Mexico, the Runnin’ Rebels defeated Air Force 1-0 on Friday and tied Denver 0-0 on Sunday in two overtimes.

With both games being played in Las Vegas, UNLV will travel to Air Force and Denver this upcoming weekend.

Utah:

Despite dominating Iowa State 68-27 on the road on the Saturday, Utah (5-0, 2-0) dropped one spot from No. 10 to No. 11 in the latest AP college football Top 25.

The Utes’ sophomore quarterback Jordan Wynn had a huge game with 325 yards and two touchdowns passing while adding 10 more yards on the ground.

Up next, Utah will face the Wyoming Cowboys in Laramie, Wyo.

Wyoming:

After being upset by UNLV on Thursday, the Wyoming Cowgirls volleyball team (17-3, 3-2) bounced back by sweeping Air Force on Saturday.

The Cowgirls were led by sophomore outside hitter Jodi Purdy, who had a team-high 13 kills and eight digs against the Falcons.
