The Weekly Blitz - Dear pro athletes, we don't really hate you
Matt L. Stephens
You don’t hate Tim Tebow, Alex Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant or even Tiger Woods.
For most sports fans, this shocking revolution will cost you thousands spent on shrinks, wondering where all of your built up frustration comes from if it’s not elite athletes.
My guess: you weren’t loved enough as a child.
It is virtually impossible to walk into a sports bar and watch a game without hearing some idiot “Ah! I hate (insert the name of the opposing player who just hit a home run) so much!”
The truth is, you don’t hate them. You’re jealous. Hating someone for being good at a sport makes zero sense whatsoever. It’s completely irrational.
Red Sox fans actually wish A-Rod batted cleanup in Bean Town, the Cubs secretly want Albert Pujols more than Derrek Lee and anyone in their right mind would love to sign LeBron James.
The two athletes we hear people hate the most recently are Tebow and Woods. One didn’t do anything to deserve it and the other, nothing until recently.
Tebow’s career at the University of Florida was remarkable. Two national championships, the first underclassman to win the Heisman Trophy and he finished the season ranked in the top five nationally in terms of quarterback rating –– best in the NCAA FBS in 2009 –– all three years as a starter for the Gators.
I will go so far to say he’s is the best competitor the game of college football has ever seen. And what does he get for it? Nothing but hate outside of Gator nation, millions of fingers pointing and laughing because he cried in this season’s SEC Championship game when Florida lost to Alabama and flak because he’s a Christian.
In layman’s terms: jealousy.
Anyone who made fun of Tebow for crying after losing against Alabama clearly has never played organized sports at any sort of competitive level. Or if they have, they were too apathetic to put in an effort.
Tebow lost a shot at another national championship. What’s wrong with being emotional?
Oh, and did you know Steve Young is Mormon and Sandy Koufax was Jewish? Is there any reason to hate them? Tebow didn’t ask to be placed on a pedestal, we did that to him.
I’m a Christian. So is the majority of this country. Why not hate us? I mean if the Civil Rights Movement in the United States has taught us anything, it’s that we should definitely hate someone because what he or she believes or what they look like.
Like I said, don’t be irrational.
But one athlete that takes even more heat, especially in the past six months, is Woods. Possibly the greatest golfer of all-time, he has become the New York Yankees of the PGA Tour –– you either love him or hate him.
If you love him, it’s because you also love the game of golf. If you hate him, well, in light of recent events, you might have a scapegoat.
I can’t count the number of people following Thanksgiving Day last year who said, “I knew it! I knew something was up with that Tiger Woods. He just never sat right with me.”
No you didn’t. Shut up. I’m not asking, I’m telling you.
Woods’ personal life has given fans a semi-legitimate reason to hate him. But if you do hate Woods due to his escapades when the wife isn’t around, it’s because you don’t like cheaters.
I’ve never cheated. I’ve never been cheated on. But I still think that, next to suicide, cheating is one of the most selfish acts one can take part in. It’s just ridiculous, showing no regard for your loved one.
Even given the circumstances, unless Tiger slept with your wife or punted your cat, you still have no reason to hate him. But you do have a scapegoat to think that he’s a giant tool –– or any other adjective used to describe poor excuses for men on VH1 reality series.
So stop saying you hate everyone. The fact is you just wish you could be as talented.
No matter which rival athlete, unless there’s a personal vendetta, always remember that your anger problems stem from issues with mommy and daddy, not David Ortiz for jacking one over the right field wall at Yankee Stadium.

I don’t see how you put Tiger Woods and Tim Tebow in the same category except for their talent in their sport. In my opinion there will never be a better golfer than Tiger Woods. Then you stated we are only jealous of there accomplishment’s. Don’t get me wrong I would like to have the Talent of any professional athlete but that doesn’t mean I hate them. I will not disrespect you or anyone else that like Tiger, that’s your opinion and we all have that right. For you to compare Tiger and Tim in a all around person there is no contest. I can’t think of a person in the world if their honest would not want their son to be like Tim Tebow. Then on the other hand who in the world would like the position to tell all the children and fans of Tiger Woods that you want them to grow up and do all the things Tiger Woods did that we know of. Stop defending him man I’m 67 years old and yes I’ve done things I could say I’m not real proud of but it onle effected me not all the children of the world plus the ladies. You know something I read from a statement coach Urbam Myers made was the Tim Tebow He recruited is the same Tim Tebow that graduated from the university of Florida. Tim Tebow does not care who you are what color you or your choice of faith. I know from my heart that Tim will help so many people in this time he has on earth. Please just do me one favor if you want to compare athletes at their sport they play you won’t find one better than Tiger Woods, but as a complete person he went from the top of the list to the very bottom. Don’t even try to fool me I’ve been around to long the only reason people say their sorry for what ever it is they have done is two words GOT CAUGHT. If they where really sorry for what they were doing they would have done one of two things before they got caught:1.Get Professional help for their problem 2. Stop. That’s it and then I would believe your really sorry. PEOPLE DON’T DO THAT THEY WAIT GET CAUGHT GO TO PRISON AND FIND GOD Thank goodness for Tim Tebow as his parents taught him God is every where not just in prison. Thank You for allowing me to post my opinion and if you don’t agree with I don’t believe I’ll lose any sleep over it. I will say this if the whole world was like Tim Tebow we wouldn’t have over crowed prisons and we could even get rid of 80 to090% of them and use the money to help people who need it.
My favorite part of this article is “Dont be irrational.” Th9is follow a line where this deluded author puts an “appearance” on Christians. Sir, stop writing, please. It’s better to be thought of as stupid then to open your mouth (pen) and remove all doubt. People don;t hate Christians, people hate Christians who think their faith is what is above all else. Tim Tebow applies and therefore is mocked accordingly.
sorry, you’re incorrect, sir. i do, in fact, hate Tim Tebow. His mom made the “moral” choice to not abort him in the Philipenes, even though abortions were illegal there at the time.
i say, it’s not too late for a super late-term abortion. you suck, Tebow.
Jake-
So it’s wrong to put someone’s faith above all else? I don’t see what you are trying to say. Why is that stupid? To believe in something so much? Most Christians put their faith above all else. I don’t see anything stupid about that statement. I applaude the author for having strong views and using Tebow as an example. I feel all Jake did was help prove the author’s point.
Ryan, your faith is your own personal thing. To bandy it about like some type of commercial cheapens it, no? I never said it was stupid, (though I myself quit believing in fairy tales long ago) so Im not sure where you got that from. I referred to the author, who while pushing his own theological agenda, disguises himself as a journalist. And you’re entitled to your opinion, we all are. I don’t have any ill will towards Tim Tebow, in fact I think he’s a great role model. His intensity, effort, and overall standing as a winner can’t be hated, his accompanying cheesiness is what gives the rest of us who watch sports for sports, fodder. Hopefully I clarified.
Jake-
Thanks for clarifying what you meant. While I may not agree (Skip Bayless frequently mentions God and Rick Reilly mentions his sons, yet we don’t say they have an agenda of being Jesus Freaks or family men) due feeling the author was being candid and conversational, just being honest about who he is, I appreciate your explanation.
