Letter to the editor
Abstract:
Phil Elder's column on Wednesday urges "Go protest something." It's the one piece of advice I wouldn't protest in his "ode to frosh."
"Get stoned" somewhere in the best natural beauty of Colorado: what a great way to blunt the intelligence it'll take to preserve any of it....

Notice how the name "Craig Hawley" doesn't appear in this list. That would be scientific evidence enough. LOL. Talk about a blunt instrument.

Tell you what if you stop saying that pot makes you stupid , I won't say it makes you smart.

Craig, I would have to disagree with you. Look at this article.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080509/ap_on_he_me/teens_drugs. Also, just because all of those people on your list have admitted to smoking pot does mean that it is right. Smoking or possession of pot is still illegal in this country with the exception of medicinal use in some states.

you got me on the illegality of it for most Mike.
I am a medical Marijuana patient so for me it is not illegal , though it is under federal law.
My point though was not the legality of it , but that smoking it does not have any relevance to intellect. If you were smart before you smoked then you are smart after you smoke. If you were a stump before you'll still be a stump after you smoke.
I believe the ladies point was not so much about legality but about her belief that is blunts your intellect. I see no data supporting her position.
My list was just to show that smart people have smoked weed and done fine in life.
But you are right it is illegal. Now I feel it should be legalized but it is not as of yet.
Hey John nice to see ya and thanks for the agreement on this issue. I see like me , your an honest guy who will agree with someone when you think they are right , instead of just disagree because you don't like that person or some such silliness.
Nice to see you on this site again.

Smoking pot should not be the factor behind an individual's enjoyment of life.
If you need pot to "make" your college experience or end a stressful day, then I say you have issues and should find another outlet. Studies have shown that depressed teens are more likely to try pot, people with anxieties, etc. So think about that next time someone tells you how much they love pot.
I don't believe in making pot legal or smoking it because pot should not be the "cure-all" for other issues. If you are a recreational smoker, think about the last time you smoked one - what else was going on when you decided you needed to get high? "Well, I wanted to get high" usually has an invisible "because" attached.
All this bull about "high people don't cause accidents" and "it doesn't kill brain cells" are ludicrious justifications.
Parents who frequently smoke pot, are frequently NOT there for their children. That's called neglect. On top of that, pot is linked to infertility.
And the driving - when you are high, depth-perception is lost. I have seen high people drive ridiculously slow AND ridculously fast, stop WAY before they should, etc - ALL of which are traffic hazards. People that are high are twice as likely to get into car crashes.
FURTHERMORE, the Canadian government concluded a study that found marijuana smoke contained more toxins than tobacco smoke. That includes 20 times more ammonia.
Pot increases the risk of pushing people to psychosis. Which goes back to what I was saying - people with issues tend to be the ones who resort to pot - to hide deeper issues.
Oh and gum disease and...
Pot alters your mind and there are idiots in this world that want it to be legal because it is "safe"? COME ON!
It's your life. Try enjoying it without drugs. If you chose to use them, remember they can and will impact you, and likely those around you.
(I am omitting an implications to medical marijuana usage because that is NOT the same issue)

While you make some valid points , I think you present one side.
I went to a drug rehab facility when I was younger because my parents like you though smoking pot was the end of the world.
Now these are the experts in the field Student.
They tested me and I was shrinks and every doctor in every field. Their conclusion was that I was a drug user not an abuser. I can see you saying what?
My parents didn't like the finding either.
I realize the health risk from smoking , and accept it. I don't smoke to escape or get away from reality. I don't smoke because as you suggest.
I don't get high because I am depressed , or upset or any other emotion.
You completely ignore one major factor for smoking pot at least in my case.
I LIKE THE WAY I FEEL WHEN I GET HIGH. PERIOD!!!
It is a sensory heitner. Things taste better , c sound better , look better and I feel at peace with the universe.
Your shortsighted , one sided argument makes the old argument if you have to end your day with pot then there is something wrong with your life.
You assume every one that smokes pot has to smoke it. How about we want to smoke it and enjoy the experience.
Why does a child spin around until they get dizzy and fall over. They want to get high. They just enjoy the feeling. The are not spinning for any sinister motive.
So I agree with many of the things you said , but your small niche for pot smokers is very limited and does not come close to covering the actual reasons people smoke and lumps all pot smokers into your little space.
So I am sorry , but according to many of the experts you think say certain things in studies have said as long as I am willing to take the health ricks of smoking pot it is fine with them and I don't have a problem.
I also would ask if you have ever had a drop of alcohol in your life.
If yes then why did you drink that alcohol?
Were you trying to get away from some harsh reality?
Also I might point out it is medical fact that every bit of alcohol you consume kills X amount of brain cells. Yet I do not see adults giving up alcohol because it does so.
So I find your argument OK to a point , but when you try to put all pot smokers into your little box you lose credibility.
You correctly say pot smoking should not be the factor in a persons enjoyment of life.
QUITE TRUE.
However it is perfectly OK if it is A FACTOR in the enjoyment of life.

Interestingly enough, UCLA just released a study that links smoking marijuana to lung cancer prevention. The THC apparently prevents tumor growth.
Craig Hawley
posted 5/10/08 @ 8:20 PM MST
THC is very useful for cancer patients also. I give marijuana free to anyone that has cancer , and three people I gave it to are in remission.
It is an anticonvulsant and keeps them from throwing up so much after Chemo. Also it makes them get the munchies and eat thus maintaining the body weight neccesary to fight of disease.
The lies about marijuana are plentiful and all one has to do is watch the old movie called REFFER MADNESS to see how the powers that be lie through their teeth about the drug.
That movie was responsible for a lot of kids OD'ing on dangerous drugs.
I myself went through a experimental stage that could have been fatal because of that movie.
It had a scene if I remember correctly where a guy smokes a joint and then runs around a field with am ax trying to kill his friends.
Anyone that has smoked weed knows that people that are high are the mellowest non violent people around.
I would much rather be in a bar full of stoners than a bar full of drunks. I have seen drunks pick a fight for no reason.
You could call a stoners mother a whore and he would probably tell you that right after he finishes his pizza he will get very cross with you. LOL!

There is a reason their is not term MEAN POT SMOKER in our lexicon.
Not that hard to not get to drunk. Just don't drink to much.
If you smoke to much pot your just going to sleep.
Another nice benefit. If you smoke to much pot you don't throe up and pee on your self. LOL!

And it is very cute that you think I care enough about you or your comments to get upset. Not once so far have I been upset at anyone.
See you mix up accuracy for anger. For instance when I call you a moron it fits by definition , and has no anger attached to it simply a statement of fact.
Now on the other hand no one with half a brain is fooled into thinking you are anyone except the person who I already proved was a liar by exposing you for taking quotes out of previous posts where I was making fun of your inane Crag Hawley .... nicks and trying to pass it off as my sentiment.
You remember I would say something like , if you are going to make inane nicks about me let me give you one , and then said something like....

Instead of taking my whole comment in which I was making fun of you , you just said .....

So we all know I get to you and your are transparent in that. You try to pretend to be several people when anyone reading your posts can see it is the same juvenile hand behind each post.
So far not one argument that is valid against what I said. Just your personal attacks on me which are not even creative or well thought out.
To bad you are as ineffective at attacking me personally as you are at attacking my arguments.

Remember this started with one of your classmates creating a juvenile crisis at your school.
Then you go on to say that voting doesn't mean you read the resolution. Man you are hilarious and a laughing stock if nothing else.
Talk about obsessed. You stay in your room crouched over the keyboard trying to do the impossible.
Hey you can probably get others who don't like me from other papers to sign also.
You see those who sign are my opponents and a lot of them will end up being Liberal morons.
So unwittingly you Are making me a legend. Thank you my simple friend.
I hope the list is huge. Then I can show it on my other web sites and garner the praise of my conservative friends for ticking you off.
Maybe I can get others to do the same thing at other sites. Pretty soon I'll be all over the net. Then I can finally launch that web site you spoke of but this time with a huge following and many hits per day. Then I can sell advertising space on the site and maker a living doing that.

great joke.
Two Arabs boarded a flight out of London. One took a window seat, and the other sat next to him, in the middle seat.
Just before takeoff, a Marine sat down in the aisle seat.
After takeoff, the Marine kicked his shoes off, wiggled his toes and was just settling in, when the Arab in the window seat said, "I need to get up and get a Coke."
"Don't get up," said the Marine, "I'm in the aisle seat. I'll get it for you."
As soon as he left, one of the Arabs picked up the Marine's shoe, and spat in it.
When the Marine returned with the Coke, the other Arab said, "That looks good. I'd really like one, too."
Again, obligingly, the Marine went to fetch it.
While he was gone, the other Arab picked up the Marine's other shoe, and spat in it.
When the Marine returned, they all sat back and enjoyed the flight.
As the plane was landing, the Marine slipped his feet into his shoes - and knew immediately what had happened.
"Why does it have to be this way?" he asked.
"How long must this go on? This fighting between our nations? This hatred? This animosity? This spitting in shoes............and pissing in Cokes?"

I must take issue with you that getting stoned is going to blunt your ability to achieve great things in life.
Bill Clinton comes to mind. LOL! He became President. You linking pot smoking to somehow making a person dumb has not one shred of empirical data to support tit.
What you have said is just your personal opinion. I can list hundreds of people that have accomplished great things in their lives and have effected the world in positive ways that smoked Pot.
If you don't smoke it and don't like people who do , that is your right and I support it. But don't try to hang some label on people who do because your against it.
here are a few people and according to the source most admitted they smoked pot. You may recognize a few names and I would have to say nothing was blunted in their lives by their consumption of Marijuana.

Almost every single one of these names have admitted to smoking cannabis.
If all these famous people do it, including presidents, why is it still illegal. If a president can do something, why cant we?

You have no scientific evidence that smoking pot makes you unable to function in society at a high level. I have just listed a plethora of people who have accomplished great things and did smoke pot.
Now I am not so silly as to suggest the pot smoking is why they did so well. You however try to pull off a disengenious comment that somehow if they smoke pot they are doomed to be a blunt tool. LOL!
Tell you what if you stop saying that pot makes you stupid , I won't say it makes you smart.
People rise and fall on who they are not what they smoke.
