Latina student breaks down diversity barriers
Abstract:
Walking onto campus as an incoming freshman, Raquel Ramirez felt the strain of being a part of the minority. As a child, she grew up in a tight-knit Latino family where the children were taught the importance of their cultural background.
"It is something my family wants us to cherish and hold onto," Ramirez said....

When will these racist bigots, who judge people by the color of their skin and refer to them in the same way, just go away?
The idea that people like this, who spread hate and intolerance of persons who are not like them, somehow have something important to say is asinine.
And stop referring to me by the color of my skin; it has nothing to do with my soul, my mind, or my character.
Or better yet, if you want to refer to me by the color of my skin, then I will refer to you by the size of your ass.

Another anonymous poster. The person who wrote the article in my opinion has a huge problem.
The bad thing about CSU is that there is a much bigger Caucasian population in relation to Hispanics
This is a horrible statement and smacks of racism.
As if it is a bad thing when to many Caucasians ( politically correct term for whites ) , are around and somehow if there were more Latinos , then CSU would not be bad.
It shouldn't matter how many people of whatever race are there. Like I said I could attend Grambling and get along just fine because I don't care what color you are.
If your a jerk your a jerk whatever color you are.
This person is insecure and needs to get help with their problem.
Bigot Alert should direct their ire at the writer of the article.
Except the last sentence.
Or better yet, if you want to refer to me by the color of my skin, then I will refer to you by the size of your ass.
Talk about an asinine statement. I was unawares that the article was about Derriere size.
Typical juvenile response.

The thing that gets me is how the Collegian and other cow to to bigots if they are minority's.
If I was a white bigot and wrote an article saying the only thing bad about CSU is they allow to many Latinos or any other ethnic group I would never have been published.
Yet the Collegian knowingly published this garbage.
As long as it is directed towards the majority , the Collegian seems to be just fine with racism and bigotry.
SAD!!!!!

You know what, I retract that previous statement, I am completely wrong.
I have no life and no friends, I was just lying. I am such a sad and lonely person, I was just reaching out to a younger generation, in hopes that I might find some kind of acceptance.
My apologies to all who will continue to be offended by my intrusive and self-loving comments, I am in a moment of weakness now and will likely never return to it -- my boyfriend just left me and I'm feeling down as repeated bouts of self-pleasuring leave me unfulfilled.
Please forgive me,

You'll notice my stalker is so unoriginal and lazy they are using cut and paste and the same tired lame cut downs. I on the other hand do not steal their lame nicks because they are lame.
I can understand them stealing my name as their nick as they are in love with everything me.
They fantasise about being weith me. They wish they could have the originality and sharp with that I posses.
Look at the other posts and you will find this one again. Sad really.
Here is the best they can do. The insinuate that I am Gay , lonely , and friendless.
Yet right in this thread I have support against the Racist and Bigoted article written here. So this moron chose to list this on a thread where the Students and I agree. Man this person is really a feeble debater.
Now remember this person promised a wave of anti Craig Hawley rhetoric from their thousands of supporters. So when that did not materialize , they have written about two or three posts and changed their nick to make it look like different people.
I can't go into how I know it is the same person or I could get my spy on the collegian in trouble. LOL!
So my opponent used two childish cut an paste cut downs which I answered with two different and pithy rebuttals.
Yea this moron is making my points about them every time they open their idiotic mouth.
Speak on my unworthy opponent. You just build my legend.

It is fun watching him obsess and then fail so grandly. Very amusing to me.
Meanwhile he broke up a perfectly good discussion on this thread for his own selfish hatred of me. These people have no lives and rel mental issues.
Meanwhile I have gotten a facebook page. I like you have to use a real name and no ridiculous childish nicks like here. Plus their pic upload software is awesome.
I have only been there a week or so , so I am still trying to figure out how to navigate the site.
But like it so far.
I feel sorry for these poor souls who write these inane posts and waste their time while ruining any meaningful dialogue here.

Been online telling the thousands of CSU students that you said anyone on Facebook using their real names is an idiot.
Gee according to them you are just an idiot with no friends. Most of them think like me that you are just one sacred little boy changing nicks in a desperate attempt to create imaginary friends.
You probably play a lot of role playing fantasy games.
When you trashed me , you just look obsessed and stupid. But now you have trashed a huge portion of the campus. Do you have any idea how many CSU students have a MySpace and Facebook page.
You just insulted every one of them in your inane attempt to get at me. You are the dumbest person I have ever seen.
Is there anyone else at CSU you would like to insult. Perhaps the professors, or some other groups of students you have not already insulted.
As I said before every time you open your mouth you alienate your self and further marginalize your idiotic opinions.
Come on you can do it. Open that big mouth and insult another group of your peers.
I happen to think they are a pretty smart and engaging group of young adults ( with the exception of your lame butt ). I enjoy dialoguing with them on Facebook and MySpace.
Most of my MySpace page is bands. I have met some really talented people there. Of course you would cut these pages down , because you have tried and failed to get any friends there.
If I had never had a MySpace page I would have never met these interesting and talented bands. I would have never seen them play and enjoyed their music.
So it is you my moronic anonymous poster that is limiting your life to masturbatory fantasies of a life.
Now back to your computer where you think you are somebody

Clearly, we have embellished Ms. Ramirez's statement here, folks!
Although, after initially reading her criticism of CSU as a campus that has too many white people, it seemed like a racist comment, the simple truth is that we are ASSUMING (yes, making asses out of ourselves, the author of the article, and Ms. Ramirez) an intentionally bigoted statement. Perhaps the comment was taken out of context - for example, maybe Ms. Ramirez went on to say that having so many white people around was not a BAD thing, but maybe just a serious challenge for her as she sought acceptance into an often times judgmental and unforgiving society.
And...one last thing.
The Collegian should be applauded for publishing this article. The fact that it was based off the views of an Hispanic Woman in "El Centro" is, in itself, a strong embodiment of why diversity is so important, especially in a college environment.

Sorry Ty I have a problem with what you wrote. The author had plenty of time to respond here and set us straight and did not avail herself of that opportunity. I agree that diversity is one of Americas strengths. But it is only a strength as long as we put being Americans first and ethnicity's last.
Hyphenated Americans are not real Americans and weaken us. I will give you an example of this by a real American and WWII hero. Read this and please pass it on to every American you know.

Hi All,
The following was a speech given by Bill Hagendorn, at the Submarine Veterans Memorial at the Seal Beach Weapons Center, for there Memorial Day Ceremony. He was a Submariner and a proud one. He served his country, and his family and God. He said in this speech what needs to be said and often until we wake up. America is at the brink, and it is up to us to bring her back. God Bless Bill, the Men and Women of our Armed Forces, and God Bless America.
I am Bill Hagendorn:
Little known is the fact that no American Sub ever sunk an enemy ship until WWII. We had to learn the art of war from the ground up. Pre-war teaching instructed Submarines the safest and only way to sink enemy ships was from a submerged position. However sinking's were few.
Because of our poor results a new breed of fearless, aggressive, young men were willing to try a riskier method..... by using the sub as a torpedo boat attack, while remaining on the surface. The sinking of enemy ships increased dramatically. Submarines losses also increased.
The Submarine is tooled for one single purpose the destruction of the enemy. Everything aboard is essential . Everything is duplicated as a back up so that the Sub can effectively operate even after she has been severely damaged. After four giant engines were installed, room had to be found for all the other gear such as repair tools, food for three months and loads of spare parts. The tanks were filled with 120,000 gallons of fuel. Now it was time to squeeze into the already crowded hull , 24 twenty-foot long torpedo's. There was a small place left and that was where they shoe horned in the crew. There was no room for a medical doctor.
Submariners are put through many tests to pre determine if they could stand up under the terrifying sound of a sever depth charge attack. he sound of a depth charge is intensified under water. The sudden ear splitting crack of the explosion is similar to a severe summer thunder and lightening storm.
Combat beneath the sea is always difficult because one must remain still , quietly and very patiently await the uncertain outcome. That is when the idle mind begins it's corrosive effect. While under attack, there was no place to hide and there was no alternative except to squarely face the issue. Try not to make eye contact as that may reveal your hidden inner feelings.
On these bronze plaques, are thousands of faceless names. But we can still recall those youthful faces knowing full well that their dreams of a life with a family and a successful career was unfulfilled.
In Mattoon , Illinois deeply etched into a giant block of polished marble are these simple words. Call out our names as the years roll by. Remember us , and we will never die.
That is exactly what we are doing today, remembering those that gave up their short lives in the name of Freedom.
Then follows a list of 52 Submarines lost in WWII. Many with ALL HANDS LOST.
Bill Continues:
Our group is swiftly fading into history. But if we could leave a few words for future Americans, let it be known that freedom they are enjoying... many times abusing... and it seems lately are flaunting their unearned..... self important status is in part because a small band of volunteers offered.... and often lost their lives to help preserve the American way of life.
To Quote President Theodore Roosevelt.... Who minced no words when her said 100 years ago, " There is no room in this country for Hyphenated Americans". A Hyphenated American is not 100% American, nor is he 100% anything else.
For example if you were born in Mexico and become an American citizen, you are not a Mexican American..... because you have sworn allegiance to America. You are now an American of Mexican descent.
There is no such thing as a Hyphenated American any more than there are thin fat men or short tall men. Let's refer to ourselves by our correct name which is American ... period.
The one certain way to bring this country to ruin is to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities....an intricate knot of Chinese Americans...Cuban Americans....Arab Americans...Korean Americans...African Americans...German Americans...Mexican Americans all preseving their own nationaalities and way of life.
The men who do not become 100% American are not Americans. Some men from some countries deserted their own countries , when all that was needed to improve their lives was loyalty to the government plus faith in their own country. Imagine...deserters waving foreign flags...marching on our streets , protesting laws that true Americans fought and died for. Can we expect allegiance from men who deserted their country of birth because the grass was greener elsewhere? what will happen if that green grass should suddenly turn brown? Will they desert our country as they did their own. Some will , others who knows.
A man can not possibly divide his loyalties between two nations any more than he can between two wives.
Don't let our enemies split Americans into separate groups. Remember Benjamin Franklin's words.... Untied we stand divided we fall. The military tactic now being used against us is , divide and conquer. Our jealous enemies would like nothing better than to see America brought to her knees...and make no mistake....we are under siege from a strong ...cunning..determined enemy...living among us disguised as students....tourists....Hyphenated Americans, all waiting to bring American down.
If you think we are not under siege , explain why a rattle brained Congressman voted against making English the official language of the United States. He said it was discriminatory....against who?
Listen carefully Mr. Congressman. Is a single language important??
In February 1942 a powerful Japanese Invasion force of 96 ships headed for oil rich Java. To stop them was a Cruiser& Destroyer task force from our Nations. Dutch Admiral Doorman who was in charge, spoke only Dutch and all orders had to be translated into English. That delay resulted in the loss of the Houston....Perth...Deruyter & Electra plus 100's of allied lives. The Jap invasion force was untouched and the invasion was a complete success, but for the allies it was a complete defeat. WHY?? Because the Japanese spoke only one language Japanese.
Study up Mr. Congressman. Are we being split up or what? How many have heard of Americans refusing to say the pledge of allegiance....even the Supreme Court said it was Ok to burn the American flag.....all in the name of freedom of expression...I say BULL ..... Loony
How about that school boy who flew the US Flag upside down in front of his school and above it the Mexican flag.
Tell me is someone successfully dividing America or not?
During WWII , Americans set aside their differences and worked and fought shoulder to shoulder and by doing so , America in 1942 rose from near defeat to become the worlds most powerful nation. Think about that.
So I say God Bless America and thank you ....loyal.....fellow Americans, for attending our Memorial day service. I Salute You.
My name is Bill Hagendorn: When WWII started on Sept 1st, 1939, I was just five months short of being old enough to join the Navy. In 1940 I left High School and enlisted at 17. I stayed in the Navy for the entire length of the war 1940-1946. Uncle Sam invited me to the Korean Party for two more years. I became sort of what is known as a double dipper. Now you know who i am .
God Bless you Bill. It was an honor to hear your words, and honor to meet you, and an honor to pay tribute to your fallen comrades this memorial Day. May your words and lessons live on in my heart and in the minds of the future generations I plan on sharing them with.
Hyphenated Americans are not real Americans and weaken us. I will give you an example of this by a real American and WWII hero. Read this and please pass it on to every American you know.

I am sorry I reread the article and it is still racist.
She says she goes to El Centro to be with people like her.
I thought everyone was like her. It is how you view the world. Perhaps her parents should have put less emphasis on being Latino and more on being a human being.
My parents not once told me to be proud to be white. They told me to be proud to be one of God's children like every one else , and to be an American.
This girls was taught that being Latino is the most important thing in life. IT IS NOT.
I am sorry , you can read it a million times and it is still a racist , bigoted argument and article that speaks to the reason some have racial issues.
How does this article do a damn thing to bring us closer together. IT DOES NOT.
It is counter productive and separates rather than brings together.
I go to South Central Los Angeles all the time and hang out with my friend in the music industry. She runs a Hip Hop Label.
I never once felt like there were to many Blacks around. That is because I don't think in terms of color.
This lady has issues and I am sorry I blame her parents.

Very well, very swell, indeed.
Rather than showcasing animosity against white people, Ms. Ramirez merely wants people to sympathize for latin culture.
However, I do believe that it is a plea for self-pity, as if minorities at CSU have it SO MUCH HARDER than white people, even when we all have the same resources and opportunities. At the very worst, this is ignorance, not racism.
And just because she neglects to see things from the caucasian perspective does not mean that we should do the same -- I have no idea what it is like to be a latina student in a predominantly white community. Maybe it is harder than it seems.
In no way, whatsoever, does this article intend to blame or condemn white people. Being a wonder bread boy myself, I feel that it is a misguided attempt to encourage open-mindedness and diversity on campus.
Her lack of tact is what made the article seem racist: otherwise, it is our own oversensitivity that makes us feel offended.
Mr. Hawley, I do see where you are coming from, though, because if Ms. Ramirez was white and tried to argue the same points, she would have been labeled a racist member of the KKK who hated all other cultures. She would have been ostracized and condemned for all of eternity, just for saying that it is not always easy for white people, either.
The bottom line is this: A diverse community will only flourish if all members, be they white, black, hispanic, asian, or even extra terrestrial, make a concerted effort to forget about cultural differences. That is, we must wipe the gook out of our eyes, clean the potato residue out of our ears, and realize that, Hey! Ya know what? We are all Rams at heart! We all want success at Colorado State, and the best way to achieve this is by working together, not against each other, regardless of how many petty difference we might have.

Hey Ty I will admit without meeting her and talking to her I have no idea what she is really like or her motives , prejudices , or anything else.
However neither do you. LOL! Now you may have met her and if you have then you are one up on me and I would take your word for it she is not what the article clearly makes her out to be.
However , it is paramount that we watch what we say and how we say it. In the absence of personal meeting I must form my opinion of her from her words.
And you are right if she was white and said that about any minority she would have been crucified. White Christians are the new whipping boy of society. Attack a Christian Church and nothing happens to you.
Attack a Mosque and you are a dead man.
So I would love to give her the benefit of the doubt as you have. I am having a hard time doing that though as I am not seeing her correct the misperception by simply posting here and saying that she may have misspoken and then all would be fine with the world.
And I won't buy that she has not read her article and posts about it. Human ego would dictate she has. I was published in the RamRepublic twice and you can bet I read it and sent copies to all my family and friends.
So I call on her to simply write a post explaining her rhetoric and I will gladly give her the benefit of the doubt. I as a Christian look for the good in my fellow human beings and take no joy in pointing out what I see as their shortcomings.
So please ma'am if you could just write us a post that explains your motives and make us understand why what you said was not racist I am both willing and looking forward to the opportunity to say I stand corrected.
I feel that is fair Ty. Don't you.
You and I both have valid points and neither can be validated completely without a response from the author.
Hey man thanks for letting me see it a different way and it has been my pleasure to make your acquaintance.
If you are on Facebook give me a shout out and I would love to add you to my friends list.

A justification from either Ms. Ramirez or the author of the article would definitely clear up some of the confusion.
A simple, "Ms. Ramirez, what exactly did you mean when you said that the bad thing about CSU was that it had a much larger population of caucasians in relation to hispanics?" would hopefully get to the roots of her intentions.
Either way, her answer would be skewed in her favor, and we would never be able to understand the TRUE truth. Because, you know, she might just give us an answer that we would want to hear, not the dirty honest facts. After all, maybe she really has a grudge against gringos.
We will never know unless we are GOD, or unless we put ourselves in her shoes.
Congrats on your publication in the RamRepublic, too, man. I would love to read what you had to say, especially if it was controversial or border-line socially unacceptable. lol...like giving a purple nurple to "THE MAN". But that's a totally different story.
I appreciate and respect the ideas that you bring to the table, the way you view life, and the pride you have in being an American.
Peace and happiness to you, my friend, and keep on thinking the way that you do.

You make a valid point about the veracity of the answer when she already knows what we want to hear.
I will of course put your interpretation and other possibilities into my mind and let it stew.
I to have appreciated my dialogue with you. I am an American first and may fight with other Americans tooth and nail , but let someone outside of America attack my fellow American and I have the Americans back.
If you don't stand for something , you'll fall for anything.
You are an articulate and reasonable person and it has been my pleasure to hear your views.
I hope I did this right. Here is the link to my second article entitled Liberalism Is Killing America.

Can we cut the bullshit?
She is a racist bigot.
The writer is a promoter of racist bigotry.
Anyone who would rationalize this crap is a racist bigot apologist.
How blind can you people be?

I find this statement highly offensive.
Why is it bad because you went to a place with more whites than you were used to. Perhaps saying it was different would have been appropriate.
El Centro was my home away from home. It was a place I could go and feel comfortable and see people who are like me," Ramirez said.
I see so you subscribe to some minority quota. How about you learn to get along with other races instead of saying it is bad if there are more of them than you.
People have the constitutional right to be around who they want. If you go to school in a mostly white community then expect to have mostly whites.
You go to South Central Los Angeles and it is mostly Black. If I chose to move their I would not demand that they ship in more white people to make me comfortable.
I live in Reseda , right next to Van Nuys which is very very heavily Latino. Should I follow your advice and demand that they stop renting to Latinos ands increase the white and Black population.
In case you have not noticed we are all like you except for skin color. I find your comments and the tenor of this article to be racist and bigoted.
You need to learn to get along with others and if you don't like hanging around with mostly whites then go to a different school or area of the country.
By inference when you say you would go to El Centro to feel more comfortable with people like you , you make it sound like you can't be comfortable around any one but another Latino.
Knowing and appreciating who you are and your culture is fine , but how about transcending that and becoming an American and oh I don't know a human being.
I feel comfortable around anyone. Black , Latino , Chinese , Japanese , American Indian. I have never felt uncomfortable around anyone.
Your article is full of elitist racist comments.
There are Universities that have heavy Black or Latino Populations. Do we start to demand that they force more white to attend. After all you would have to extend your racist views to others.
There goes Grambling.
Grambling, Louisiana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThe town is home to Grambling State University. ... The racial makeup of the town was 1.07% White, 97.10% African American, 0.11% Native American
Your article is an example of people who do not want to assimilate and become Americans first and Latinos second , but want to create a replication of their original culture.
I would suggest that if you want to hang around Latinos so badly and find whites uncomfortable that you move to a Latino country.
Your argument is as ludicrous as me going to Mexico and demanding that they stop having so many Mexicans around , because they make me uncomfortable.
For me, it is hard when they are talking about immigration and how all of the immigrants are taking resources away from people. They can't even apply for those resources because they are undocumented," she said
Man you are uninformed and ignorant. Have you ever heard of Illegal Aliens suing Identity theft and other means to obtain fraudulent SSN's and then get benefits.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0108/Lou_Dobbs_alert_Illegal_immigrants_may_get_rebates.html
I am sorry but I have not found much in your article that is truthful or accurate.
I see a person that is racist and wants to makes excuses for everything negative while demanding that the world change to make her more comfortable.
Perhaps if you spent a little more time trying to get along with and learn to appreciate others you would feel more comfortable around them. Instead you want us to change CSU and the world to fit your comfort level.
I guess one reason for your niave and ignorant attitude is your young. But that doesn't excuse you it just explains you.
Grow up and live in the real world.
