I'm sure you'd like to put the issue of your blunder in the past, yet that's not to be. The damage has been done and I'm sure your future prospective employers won't forget either. Unfortunately this may also hold for the rest of us at CSU. A real man would not hide behind the 1st amendment in order to spout off illogical, unfounded, radical activist ideals with little to no responsibility for his actions. A real man would resign. Yet, you seem not to be a real man, but an ill-informed, radical-lefty boy who will live out his years in resentfull bitterness. Good riddance!
This whole incident would not have had much attention had it not been for all the publicity that everyone, minus the editorial board, gave it. Publicity stunt...yes. Did it work...yes. When one does not agree with such a stunt, well, one should ignore it through marginalization...not censorship.
The use of terms such as illogical do little for an argument such as this. Logic? A mere statement like this editorial from September 21st is outside the bounds of logic. There is no grounds to say it was logical or illogical. These are just terms people like to throw around to sound smart. Is what he did logical? Well, if he wanted to get people arguing...mission accomplished as all the comments have proven sufficiently.
As far as future jobs go. I bet my money that McSwane will be all the better for getting publicity like this. Hopefully, he doesn't fall into the same type of journalism that rush Limbaugh's, Bill O'Reilly's, Randy Rhoades', and Al Franken's fall into...if that is what anybody would call journalism.
I see somebody who made an unpopular statement that sparked controversy. It was subtle enough to not have been propaganda. Unlike, all the pundits from the left and the right, which I despise both, he shot for simple retrospection of our values. It is naive to make this a left/right issue. I would say that it is a fair assumption that if he would have said "Fuck bin Laden" little would have been to done in the way of calling for his resignation. If he would have said "Fuck Kerry", the right would have stood up for his freedom of speech and the left would have demanded his resignation. Maybe the latter assumption is wrong, but the former, I guess is spot on. We put too much stock in holding up political figures in this country and need to remember that they are citizens just like you and I.

Very presumptious of you to tell me as a conservative what I would and would not do. If McSwane had said F Hillary Clinton I would have come down on him as hard as I did for F Bush. I despise Hillary yet I am smart enough to know that by saying F her I would only help her. Just look at Moveon.org and General Pretraeus. Was Pretraeus wounded by their attack and free speech. No it back fired as decent civil Americans rejected tgarbage put out by the left and sided with the General.
So wrong again Ryan. There is no place for pulling a McSwane inany legitimate news source period. Liberal, Conservative they should all denounce any one using this trashy . lazy , cheap , juvenile language.

I am proud of the board for looking at the bigger picture rather than relying on cash and politics to quash your voice – or the voice of any student at the university.
You took responsibility for publishing that editorial and you took the consequences. That is as it should be.
In years to come, your fellow staff members will be able to look back and take pride in the fact that they stood up for principles in the face of difficult consequences.
Perhaps the ones who promoted the financial consequences will come to a realization that there are more important things in our desperate nation than demonstrating disapproval of expletives!
I wish for you and your staff and newspaper a speedy recovery and prosperity in the future.
And now on to the issues you were trying to bring to the fore!

I have to thank CSU for defending free speech and providing a little light in the dark world that is the Bush regime. I am heartened that the light has not completely gone out and that the press albeit even an Fbomb is aloud to stand. There are few countries who can say this or who can stand criticism. Thank you, Thank you! I am less embarrassed to be an American. I am 51 years old still learning and I commend our students even for an hour of brashness.

I wonder if you and others would have seen it as a Free Speech issue if he had said: "Hillary is a C*nt" or "Barrack is a N"? Aren't these covered by the 1st Amendment also? Wouldn't they have been considered brash? Wouldn't they have stirred the debate? Wouldn't they have brought light to the dark? But me thinks, the paper would have fired him and there would have been no defense of his free speech rights.

Your "editorial" was childish and intellectually vacant.
Sophomoric profanity aside, I would think that the university could find an editor with more to offer than McSwane.
Informed debate is good. "Shock jock" outbursts without substance aren't.
I encourage the administration to start shopping for a replacement.

Mr. McSwane has shown by his statement that he still doesn't get it. Should we be surprised that the author of the infamous F Bush headline accepts the boards admonishment yet doesn't apologize. If you truly accept the boards admonishment then why not apologize for going over the line your cronies said you did. No you are still full of your self and unrepentant.
And this was never about free speech Mr. McSwane. You and your lunatic Liberal supporters keep trying to make it about free speech so you can try to wave free speech flag. If any one tried to stop you from saying what you did , I would have been the first one to side with you. This is about your atrocious behavior. This is about you costing the school your so proud to be a student at national humiliation. This is about you costing the paper you supposedly are in charge of $30,000. This is about costing the University future donations and Alumni support.
And you had yet another chance to do the right thing and apologize and let us all move on from this. Instead you took this opportunity to try to come off as some kind of saint for accepting the boards admonishment ( if you had fought it you would have lost ), without apologizing for your actions that caused that admonishment , and to try to portray your self as some kind of victim of speech suppression. You have no changed a bit and have learned nothing from your debacle.
You and your board have done the right a huge favor by exposing your hatred and disdain for most of America. Your cronies and supporters made fun of Ms. Loucks and suggested that if she didn't like what you said about her President she should go somewhere else. Did you use your forum to defend her free speech. Of course not because you are not concerned with free speech just bad speech. You and your paper are akin to the National Enquirer and guess what Mr. McSwane Enquiring minds don't want to know any more.
What ever good will and forgiveness you might have garnered you have once again squandered. If you had one shred of dignity left you would apologize to the men and women of the armed forces that dies to give you the right to rape the first amendment.
The founding Fathers that wrote the First Amendment would roll over in their graves at what you are touting as free speech. If the founding Fathers wanted this kind of speech then why are there no curses from their days in the document. The first Amendment was made to keep people from trying to stifle useful dialogue not protect useless speech. When you find one Curse word in the First Amendment you let me know.
What you really did was say " F THE FIRST AMENDMENT ". Like I said since you won't apologize you must be proud of what you said and did. If this is what the Liberal Left is proud of I would love to see what you are ashamed of. Think of your lofty goals. You will be remembered for fighting for the rights of people to say F you. It is right up there with freeing the slaves. That was sarcasm in case you were to slow to get that.
This just off the real news shows. McSwane has now costs the Collegian $50,000 not 30,000. Sounds like you are heading to the poor house as a propaganda rag. Also it was reported that the staff of the Collegian is being forced to take a 10% pay cut do to Mr. McSwane's rant and childish behavior. I am sure you will all want to take Mr. McSwane out for a drink to celebrate free speech. The only draw back is you will have 10% less money to party with then the rest of the responsible students that have real jobs and did not participate in this fiasco. There is a glaring fact hat proves my point that in a civilized society there is a price for bad speech as there should be. I suggest we keep up the pressure until Mr. McSwane gets it.

Mr. Mcswane,
Yesterday I was published in a little national paper called the Los Angeles Daily News. I have been published in this paper ( a real news paper ) over 150 times. Guess what I didn't curse once. If I had I would have not been published once let alone 150 times. So I would ( in the real world ) get to offer my views to hundreds of thousands of people while if McSwane used his free speech rights like he did at CSU and his supporters seem to think is so righteous , he would have been denied expressing his views to any one. You see McSwane that is how it works out here in the real world not in some Liberal cocoon at CSU.
My Father wrote 17 books and several were on the New York Times Best Sellers list. You know my Dad must have been mortified that he did not use his free speech cursing rights once.
I can't believe we conservatives are actually trying to wise up this guy. Perhaps it is because we have more constructive things on our minds than F off McSwane. If we just let him and his supporters sit there cursing every one out they soon would be talking to them selves. Speak on young McSwane speak on. The hole is pretty deep already but I am confident you can dig it deeper. LOL!

2007 US News & World Report ranking of CSU among national universities: tied at 124 with 7 other cesspools
I HIGHLY recommend looking at all the better schools ranked in front of CSU on the list, link follows:
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php
No matter how many obscenities you print in your tiny school paper [sic], this pathetic rank will not increase until the better people go to CSU. This rank is like looking in a school body mirror. We all hope you are proud of yourselves.
And for all those that think the child McSwane is guaranteed a new job at the NYT out of school, this national rank should answer that question before it is asked. Methinks that the NYT doesn't even know what state CSU is located in.

For God's sake, go back to that page you listed and read the part in the little box that says that the full US News directory contains information about 1900+ schools and universities.
The ranking of 124th is on a freaking list titled "Top Universities". There are other schools that are not on the list. In fact, there seem to be at least one thousand seven hundred and seventy-six others that didn't even make the list.
If CSU is lucky, you'll look at one of those others and you and those who share your views will stay the heck away.

Christi is so proud of being 124 then with McSwane in charge we expect to see that number drop. Just think of Christi glowing with lefty pride as her school sinks into the sunset.
It is like a yacht called free speech lefties left a harbor to show the world they were going to say what they wanted. They did, and the world slapped the water creating a Tsunami of public opinion , advertisers and Alumni that swamped their beautiful yacht and now it is sinking fast with captain David McSwane at the helm and his supporters on board. And who is that brow sprit , well it is non other than Christi. Most of the intelligent Liberals have already jumped ship and all that can be heard above the howling of the storm is Captain McSwane cursing the elements , the boat , his supporters and any one else except him self that generated this Tsunami.
Don't worry conservatives it is just a matter of time until the hate filled Board that insulted every conservative at CSU and Captain McSwane drown in their own expletives.

Christi's day:
Logged on to check the Collegian website and was annoyed by comment from John B. that took the ranking of CSU out of context by making it sound as though it were 124th of 124 schools in the nation, rather than 124th of many top universities in the nation, leaving behind many others that didn't make the list at all. Responded by pointing out that John B. was incorrect in saying that there were no schools lower than CSU, since many hundreds of schools are not even represented on the list of top universities.
Was about to log off and head elsewhere when I caught my name in Craig Hawley's post and noticed I was being referred to as a liberal (a nasty name in Mr. Hawley's book) and certainly not an intelligent one, or I would have already jumped ship before sailing off into the sunset with my idiotic liberal friends.
Since I never responded to any of Mr. Hawley's posts, and, frankly, haven't read very many of them, I had to decide whether to stay and argue with him now that he wants to start something, or get on with my life.
Hmm. I think I'll get on with my life. Have a nice day, Mr. Hawley. The sea spray feels great on my face this afternoon! Maybe when I dry off later I'll read through some of your posts, and try to figure out why I seem to you to be the one filled with hate.

Hey Christi! I included the link to the US News site, so there was absolutely NOTHING disingenuous about the posting (other than the ranking is for 2008, not 2007 as I stated). CSU is #124 at the BOTTOM of the list. Everyone knows that there are hundreds of colleges / universities in the USA. My mistake was assuming the average CSU undergrad knew this also. So in reality, CSU BARELY made the list! Makes you proud, eh?
Now look at the schools above CSU. These better schools have better students, which justifies the better rank. So as long as CSU continues to ACT like #124 (a la _Taser This_) you will always be #124. Point made, Christi? You understand clearly now?

Well gotta go see my Step-Son's Alma Mater USC play Stanford.
My Step-Son got a full scholarship to USC , in Naval ROTC. He worked two jobs and upon graduation begin to serve his country. He was on shore leave in Sydney Australia, when we attacked Afghanistan and was one of the first troops there. He continued to serve and ended up doing four full tours.
He has a child and a wonderful wife and was teaching in San Diego. He just got called by the Pehtagon and because of his hard work , dedication, honor and sense of duty to his country , he has ben selected to workat the Pentagon. He arrived last night and is making final arrangements on his apartment in Arlington.
Mr. Mcswane should take a lesson from him. He has accomplished so much and with out cursing or disrespect to any one. He conducts him self as an Officer and a Gentleman , something most Decent Americans used to hold in high esteem instead of the base , selfindulgent , egocentric driven behavior of Mr. McSwane.

Mr. McSwane,
The board has made a business decision and has decided that someone else should not gain the benefits of your education the paper and college so dearly paid for (reported at around $30K in loss revenue). It sounds like a sound decision.
Your own editorials and since the incident has one question if you learned anything in the education process. You did state if you had to do it over you would not. However, your the tone in your writing suggests that you only just want the whole thing to blow over so you can get on doing what you have been.
Please realize that the board is giving you another chance to mature and fine tune your skills. Your fellow editors and staff are giving you another chance and at an expense far greater than the university. Afterall, this episode in thier life has cost them money in reduced pay and probable rehashing it at most job interviews in the future. So please understand that everyone, even your critics, hope you have learned from this and will display in the future the professionalism that was lacking in your editorial.
Good luck in the future and please allow me to give you three items of advice:
1. If you are going to accept responsibility for something others see as wrong saying "I'm Sorry" at the same time as accepting the blame can go a long way.
2. If someone in a room thinks your an idiot for what your doing, that person has a problem. However, if the whole room thinks your an idiot for what your doing, there might be something to it.
3. The truth is far better then anything else you can make up. Afterall, had President Clinton stated "this matter is a private issue between my wife and myself and none of the nations business" it would have all gone away. Instead he said "I did not have sexual relations with that woman .. ."
Please think about it. Again, good luck in the future.

Hey, John, yes, I understand your point. My point is that I don't think of CSU, or any of the schools ranked at 124th as "cesspools", when they did achieve a ranking on a list of top universities.
I am also aware, although I am not a CSU undergrad, average or otherwise, having never attended CSU, that while CSU ranked 124th among all top tier universities, it was ranked 62nd among the public portion of those universities. Also from US News, CSU's graduate program for occupational therapy ranked seventh in the nation, it's veterinary medicine program ranked second in the nation, College of Engineering 35th among all public universities, and the College of Business 59th among all public universities.
I'm thinking that my real objection to your point is that you seem to be condemning the school and everything it stands for based on a really short editorial written by seven students. Seven of thousands who attend CSU.
I suppose there are probably thousands of students who agree with you that the editorial was wrong, but just might possibly be offended by you calling the school they chose to attend, for whatever reason (and they probably didn't pick CSU because of McSwane) a cesspool.

It is because CSU has a somewhat decent engineering program that I hire CSU engineering undergrads. Not a bad rank, but not a good one either (the graduate school ranks you cite are meaningless to those who don't hire them). After this pathetic display in the school paper, I did NOT consider CSU a cesspool. But my current small staff of three CSU engineers were extremely embarassed by this incident nonetheless. While the rest of the young, motivated CSU undergrads are trying to better themselves and their institution rank, the Collegian goes and destroys it all in FOUR PRINTED WORDS. Then the BSC of this "fine" institution was obligated to correct this blemish on #124's record, and they punted on 1st down. So yes, I am condemning the entire school and everything it stands for as a cesspool after the BSC took a pass on honoring the hard hard work and reputation of the undergrads. Is not the BSC the voice of the student body? Surely you would not argue that they are not!
CSU will fall off of this ranking. After the _Taser This_ op ed, I will not make my spring recruiting trip to CSU for hires in a booming engineering economy. I will look above CSU on the list of schools for my next posting for new positions. The CSU throng can thank the child McSwane and their BSC for that. I'm sure that no one will notice that our rather small and insignificant engineering company will not be represented in next spring's recruitment program, but they might be surprised when many other small and insignificant companies decide to punt on CSU as well...
So to be crystal clear for Christi:
_Taser this_ = CSU non-cesspool, but at the edge
BSC decision = CSU cesspool, above your nose
Oh, and for giggles: ironic that your football team is playing SDSU this weekend. When I was a college student, I used to read this unbelieveably funny college paper from SDSU called the Koala. It was hilarious: profane, irreverent, sick, twisted. They used to publish top five lists like rejected Crayola colors (afterbirth amber still makes me laugh). But this stuck with me forever. When I meet an SDSU grad, all I think is profane, irreverent, sick twisted. Hopefully I won't think the same about the CSU grads...

Top five list is on the right.

See Cam the Ram take on McSwane at you Tube " Bdygard1 ".
Ok to show they are unbiased I think McSwane should give me an unpaid weekly column to write the conservative counter point to the rest of the Liberal Collegian. As I said I have been published over 150 times in the Los Angeles Daily News so I'll fit right in. LOL!
Let me know J David McSWane I am eagerly awaiting my first column for you guys. Call my bluff.
Oh the irony is thick.

Dear David McSwane:
You are a very insightful and brave soul and we appreciate what you are doing - in spite of the flack. The world has changed and some don't recognize that or they don't give a daxx. I hope you will follow through with making the Collegian more diverse - by hiring some "QUALIFIED" NOT JUST ACCEPTABLE AND RECOMMENDED BLACK AND OTHER MINORITY STUDENTS. You are addressing issues that people have been avoiding for years and it is helping in community and other dialogue groups outside of CSU re diversity. Please shoot me an email at llwashing@homail.com because I could not locate it in the CSU directory. I need to ask you a question or two via email.
Thanks,
Lester Washington, ABD
