Martinez toxicology report clean
Abstract:
Late CSU student Matthew Martinez' toxicology screen showed no traces of cocaine in his system, the Larimer County Coroner's Office confirmed Tuesday.
An April 15 Collegian report on the death included information from an anonymous Fort Collins Police Services employee who was involved with the investigation who said Martinez died of a cocaine overdose....

Where's the apology?
You named a kid and published (false) speculation from an anonymous source that he was doing cocaine. Do you think his family may have read that? Do you think it made them feel awful? Do you think they talked about the possibility he was a druggy at his funeral?
That's stuff you can't take back with a simple, 70-word write-over. Hell, you can't take it back with an apology, either. I'm no expert in journalistic ethics, but doesn't that seem like the right thing to do?

As you heard she said you can only agree with her but never understand the subject as she does.
We call that a narcissistic God complex sweety. Perhaps if you spent a little more time cracking the books , and less time skating you might comprehend that you have a mental condition that requires medical assistance.

Wow, that's a pretty big blunder on the part of the Collegian to publish such salacious allegations against a deceased person only to be proven wrong later. I hope this emphasizes the need for journalistic responsibility especially when the accused cannot defend themselves or their reputation.

How about a new headline Collegian. Instead of David J McSwane using his power to write juvenile taunts like F Bush , I call for them to use their big bold headlines to say WE ARE SORRY , then write an apology to this man , his family and his friends who you kicked while they were down.
This is disgraceful.

Way to go collegian...I would like to point out that in your attempt to correct your previous error, you have indeed created another one. The title of the article says "Martinez toxicology report clean" HOW DO YOU KNOW IT WAS CLEAN when it was not released? All that was stated is that he didn't have cocaine in his system... Why would they not give more information about the report if it was "clean"?

What a shame. The Collegian has been slipping since the start of last semester under the silly regime of McSwane--the supposed orphan. Maybe CBS4 will hire this shoddy journalist we know as "Fuck Bush," but the recent absolute blunder in this Martinez story is sickening.
The poor Martinez family must be reeling and I hope the Collegian understands what journalism really is about. It's about what makes a difference through the stories of real people in the grips of the Real World. I hope McStupid made a personal phone call to Martinez's family--the father?--and apologized for printing a faulty story in the first place and to follow it up with a lame brief.
The Collegian is the only college daily in Colorado with pretty nice acclaim and I hope its reputation hasn't been tarnished these last few semesters by an immature tyrant who has so much to learn. Dave, tell Michael Moore "Hi" for all of us if CBS4 doesn't hire you.

I have said from my first post that the problem has been McSwane , not the Collegian.
The article about the Martinez family is inexcusable. What would have been harmed by not running the story until they knew all the facts and then running it with sympathy and a little human compassion.
McSwane is a narcissistic , elitist and is like Hillary ion that he is all about himself and his personal power. He doesn't give a damn about his colleagues who he referred to as Underlings. He actually has contempt for the school which he sees as a threat to his power.
And lastly he is a coward , that runs for a lawyer if he feels he is going to lose that power.
I think if it was me in that position I would have offered to have the student body vote and if they thought I was doing harm to the University and should leave I would step down voluntarily with an apology for not doing the job very well.
Anyway , again very well said.

Sad, Sad, Sad. How disgusting. I would love to know who the "anonymous" police department source was that decided to trash this poor kid. I can't imagine how much that affected the family during an already traumatic time.

Just to follow up, I was Matt's father. Matt killed himself, not with cocaine, but with prescription drugs that he was taking because he was bipolar and had many anxieties and concomitant problems. I hope no one else who has this condition ever comes close to taking this way out, because I understand all too well how it affects his friends and relatives. I've learned that suicide is the second leading cause of death among college age people. Please, if anyone is considering this way out, think before you act. Nothing is worth taking your own life.

You hurt his family and denigrated him unfairly.
I also hope the Collegian learned that sometimes the story is not worth printing until you are sure.
If you have a source that said something you know will be devastating and hurtful to the family , then you should have made sure it was accurate before printing a source that was just giving their opinion and not the result of a test.
All of you who judged him as a coke freak should hang your heads in shame.
