turicianon Either let Billy Crystal host the next presidential debate or invite Gary Johnson, but please do somethingImagine if we treated our presidential debates like we treat other forms of spectacle-worthy ceremonies.

After two hours of red carpet coverage, Billy Crystal would serve as moderator. He’d soft-toss questions to President Obama and Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney that have nothing to do with politics and make jokes that weren’t well suited for the ‘90s, much less 2012.

He’d ask, “If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?” and “If you could rub a genie bottle and have whatever you wanted, what would you ask for?”

The responses would be as vague as they were Wednesday night, and it would be okay.

A super-American musician like Bruce Springsteen would serve as the house band, punctuating particularly meaningless points in the conversation and playing the National Anthem in-between questions.

The candidates wouldn’t be held to any sort of fact-based standard — not that they really are at the moment — and the entire charade could be billed as entertainment.

In essence, it would be a hybrid created from the Oscars and the Miss America Pageant, complete with the formal wear and bikini rounds.

The idea is absurd, but it makes more sense than watching two candidates spin statistics, speak in vagaries and attack each other verbally, especially considering that the debates rarely accomplish anything other than to convince the public that our politicians are afraid to discuss important issues.

Wednesday night’s Denver debate was hard to watch, but it wasn’t just because Romney couldn’t temper his smug smile, Obama seemed genuinely disinterested, Jim Lehrer was a paper weight and the evening’s highlight was a reference to Big Bird. No, it was hard to watch because the debates’ current format renders them frustratingly meaningless.

As U.S. consumers of media, we’re conditioned to viewing high-speed car chases, “Jersey Shore,” sensationalized news programming and fast-moving athletics. Our habits don’t condition us for 90 minutes of well-spun political fluff. Add to it that our current president seemed to be mentally lost on Wednesday, and what resulted was an hour-and-a-half of time wasted.

If the candidates were willing to directly answer questions, put forth real statistics and recede from their party’s talking points, the events would be more tolerable and (importantly) truly informative.

Until that happens, though, the best option is to let the presidential debates degrade into an entertainment circus or reform the format to allow more candidates and enforce deeper discussion.

It’s not that American’s won’t watch 90 minutes of a meaningful debate; we will. According to politicker.com (who reference Nielsen TV ratings), 40 million people tuned in to watch the debate on broadcast channels (which excludes cable networks such as MSNBC and Fox News). Clearly the American people care, but overall reactions to last night’s debate — as gleaned from other media coverage and personal interactions — have been decidedly negative.

It’s that the candidates (and their parties) are afraid to cut through their meticulously crafted talking points and get specific on how to solve this country’s problems, and the American public isn’t so dumb that we don’t realize what we’re hearing are half-truths.

As Kevin Jensen, the Collegian’s opinion editor, pointed out in his column earlier this week, the current system for presidential debates is all-but-rigged to restrict third party participants thanks to the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Adding a third-party candidate and holding debate participants accountable for their answers would restore respectability and solve most of the current problems associated with presidential debates.

But if the CPD isn’t willing to do that, then it might be time to phone Crystal and break out the penguin suits, because I’d rather watch Romney and Obama talk about world peace in bikinis than sit through another debate similar to Wednesday’s.

Agree with the article. The Commission on Presidential Debates is a racket that needs to be prosecuted. It’s not “all-but-rigged.” It is ENTIRELY rigged against any other party.

It’s up to the court system and Gary’s antitrust suit to save us from this two-party tyranny. But I don’t have much faith in the courts to end the CPD’s political exclusion. They weren’t interested in getting Gary into the first debate. They’ll probably drag their heels and miss the next two as well.

So it’s up to the people. Recognize that we have a choice! We do NOT have to vote D/R. We can vote for a candidate that values the Constitution! Who values civil liberties, a balanced budget, practical spending, practical application of our military, and practical laws that don’t bankrupt this nation!

    Stop practicing cognitive dissonance.

I Know 3 of the sponsers have pulled there support from the PDC,There are lists of the sponsers ,How about we boycott there products. We do have power if and only if we band together. Turn off the idiot BOX and do research on the WEB.
Corp Media,RNC & DNC Dictatorship has to end.If you are older enough to vote make shure you are registered to do so. at present 25% people 18 and some older are not even Registered. The process cannot work if many American’s view it as a spectator sport and are not actively involved. It is a privalige to vote and a CIVIC duty. By the way since the no child left behind came CIVICS is no longer taught in our schools,Along with a lot of other important stuff. I guess we do not need civics as we move to world GOV which we must put the Breaks on ASAP,we do not need a New World Order.(Remember Her HITLER)

All Obamney says…” is how inept the other one is. Honestly, we agree with both of them.” Judge Gray quipped.

A declaration is an affirmation. Independence means self-government. They could have called The Declaration of Independence, The Affirmation of Self-Government! Aha! The Founders were libertarian.

Gary Johnson and Judge Jim Gray are the only choice to Save the American Dream: Self-Government, freedom from big government tyranny and oppression…. and to Restore Justice, the guardian of Liberty! The people believe in self-government and self-medication.

Governments drive their just powers from the consent of the governed. DENY CONSENT! Tell servants of tyranny, their dictates and actions are criminal. They do not have our consent to police the world, the market or what we, as individuals choose as our medicinal/social drugs.

It is us we the people who must get the word out as we try on the internet to do so. I have sownloaded the Gary Johnson flyer from the Gary Johnson 2012 web site. I do not place then willy nelly but speak to people as to WHY I like Gary base on what he has done in the state of New Mexico as a 2 term GOV. The people in New Mexico loved as they voted him back in. Mittens
didn’t stand a snowballs chance in HELL to even think about getting reelected it that state.
The people from New Mexico should be promoting Gary More. If you have a printer which is capable of printing on both sides of the page it is only 1 piece of paper for the whole flyer. I do which it would have offered more as the Super brochure for Dr.Ron Paul had done on the issues.
Get on any radio show you may to promote gary I have been sucessful on several ocasions ,and posted what I got acrocc For Former GOV Gary Johnson.
      Peace to all

This article is spot on track. I have many times likened the primary RNC debates to the Jerry Springer show,The only thing missing were plastic chairs foe the Morans on stage to throw at each other. The only statesman at the RNC was Dr.Ron Paul and we all witnessed what the RNC did to Dr.Paul and His Delegates. The RNC was a National Crime wave across America and a National Disgrace.
Gary Johnson Has a great record in the state of New Mexico as the GOV there for 2 terms. when People wave to gary they use all 5 fingers,When people in MASS wave to Mittens they use 1 Finger,I need not tell U which one it is.
