In an interview with CNN Los Angeles this morning Bill Nye (and his great bow tie) defends his belief that climate change is the overarching cause of the swath of wildfires burning across the midwest. After getting bashed by the news anchor, Nye presents some great statistics, like the fact that 16 out of the last 17 years have had record breaking heat waves. He may be on the right track, but the prevailing scientific thought is that climate change is just one of many factors leading to these fires

Some of the evidence that Bill Nye used to support climate change is not valid. Torndoes in Michigan and Brooklyn, NY and a 30 degree temp drop in a few minutes in Maryland this weekend were two weather examples he used to support his claim. Tornadoes have occured in all 50 states (except maybe Alaska). Also the 30 degree temp drop in a few minutes was due to the passage of a gust front that was located in front of the thunderstorm. This gust front seperates warm air surrounding the thunderstorm and rain cooled air within the thunderstorm. Although a 30 degree temp drop maybe extreme, a large drop in temperature is always associated with the arrrival of a thunderstorm.

I am not a climate change skeptic, however I wish he would use valid evidence in supporting his thesis.
